CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - “A Tribute to John Smith” will be part of the Thursday, Jan. 10 edition of the P.E.I. Writers Guild Open Mic at the Receiver Coffee Co., 128 Richmond St., Charlottetown at 7 p.m.

The first event after the holidays will honour Smith, who was appointed the first Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island in 2002.

Tribute readers of Smith’s work will include Laurie Brinklow, Lobie Daughton, Julie Dennison, David Hickey, Deirdre Kessler, Richard Lemm and Brent MacLaine.

Following are the words, penned by his daughter, Julia, that Smith lived by:

Go outside…

go under the trees

feel the wind,

watch the birds…

listen to the songs of the world…

above all things… be kind…

All are welcome to this free event. The first 10 writers to sign up may read from their work—poetry or prose for up to five minutes. Following a short break, the “Tribute to John Smith” will begin.

The P.E.I. Writers’ Guild Open Mic Series will continue to run on the second Thursday of each month.
