A 27-year-old Lethbridge man who may have been exposed to COVID-19 has been charged with assault after he was alleged to have intentionally coughed in a peace officer’s face.

On Thursday night, Lethbridge police were called to a home after a report of a domestic assault. Upon arriving, it was discovered that a man was in breach of the conditions of a release order.

While the man was being taken into custody, police said he coughed directly into an officer’s face and told him he hoped the officer got infected. He also admitted that he had been exposed to a person who had been in quarantine.

On Saturday, Lethbridge police said the officer was taking a day off and was being evaluated, as per Alberta Health Services protocols.

Police have not released the name of the suspect, who is charged with assaulting a police officer and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
