NEW GLASGOW

SaltWire Network, parent company of The News, has announced a number of changes that are to be made in the coming weeks.

The most significant for readers will be the transition of this newspaper from a daily, to a weekly publication.

“There’s no doubt the newspaper business has changed dramatically over the past two decades,” said Mark Lever, President and CEO of SaltWire Network. “But when a model or product is outdated, we don’t simply say there’s no other way. We evolve.”

With The News in New Glasgow, as with the Truro Daily News, the shift is from paid-circulation dailies to paid weeklies. Publishing day will be Thursdays for both publications.

Other changes are being enacted in other regions, as well. In Cumberland County, the weeklies Amherst News and The Citizen Record will merge to become one publication, the Amherst News. There will also be a shift from a paid-for subscription publication to a free community newspaper, which will be delivered to all residents of Cumberland County.

Elsewhere, the Queens County Advance will consolidate with the South Shore Breaker. Both publications serve the same market and this move creates a single community publication for the region, as the South Shore Breaker.

These publications, complemented by their burgeoning online presence, will continue to serve readers and advertisers in their respective markets, albeit with a different approach.

“Product evolution is not an uncommon practice,” Lever said, “it’s the dynamic nature of business, and newspaper media must follow suit.”

All changes will go into effect as of July 1, 2018.
