BERLIN (Reuters) - The starting price for carbon under a new German domestic scheme applying to energy used in buildings and transport will be set in line with that of carbon certificates in the European Union's existing emissions trading scheme, government and coalition sources said on Friday.

Certificates granting the right to emit carbon dioxide under the EU's emissions trading scheme were trading at 26.30 euros per tonne on Friday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and her Social Democrat coalition partners have been negotiating through the night to thrash out a major new climate protection package.
