KENSINGTON – Burger love is nothing new for Islanders these days.
The campaign has been going strong for eight years and continues to bring out the creative side of some restaurants.
Frosty Treat in Kensington has been known for having some unique creations and Brody Ellis says that it’s all a process.
“We do some brainstorming at home and have a dinner party in January where people try a few different ones,” said Ellis, one of the owners.
As for debating on what to put on the burger, they have a simple rule.
“We don’t like vegetables.”
The Kensington dairy bar stuck with that motto this year with their S’moresgasbord burger. A patty in-between graham crackers and marshmallow with waffles as the buns and a marshmallow on top.
Although different no doubt, Ellis had a different pick for the most far out burger Frosty Treat had put out.
“The deep-fried Mars Bar for sure.”
Ellis referencing last year’s entry being the Life on Mars burger.
With funnel cake buns, an ice cream cone on top and a deep-fried mars bar in the middle.
As for his personal favourite, his vote went to the Go Bananas burger from 2016. Waffle buns, banana slices, Nutella, maple syrup and an ice cream bar on top.
“We’re a dairy bar. We like to stay with the sweet,” said Ellis.
Frosty treat isn’t the only Kensington establishment trying something off the beaten path.
Family and Friends, located on the highway toward Kensington, has also stuck with a theme throughout their three years of participating in Burger Love.
Fruit.
“We’ve done strawberries and apples and now grapes,” said owner Charlene Gill.
Their Grape d-vine burger has grape slices on the burger with a grape on top as well.
“Every year we’ve done a fruit theme. I sit down with my head chef Nicole and picked a fruit,” said Gill.
She also said last year their burger sales doubled the year before, while this year they have surpassed last year’s total.
As for next year’s creation, Gill intends to keep that a secret but said that it will once again be a fruit.
