SPORTING MOUNTAIN, N.S. — A decision on the Sporting Mountain Quarry expansion project is expected to be made by Tuesday.

Nova Construction is awaiting the results of an environmental assessment of the proposed expansion of its quarry located in Richmond County.

The Antigonish-based company wants to extend the existing four-hectare quarry footprint to 10 hectares in order to continue operations at the quarry to meet local and regional aggregate demand.

The operations of the expanded quarry, located about six kilometres north of River Bourgeois on Morrison Road, are anticipated to conclude this year, pending regulatory approval.

Nova Construction said the planned production rate of up to 30,000 tonnes per year will remain unchanged with the proposed expansion.

The company says the project footprint is estimated to last at least 30-plus years, depending on the market demand.

The Sporting Mountain Quarry site consists of a quarry used to extract rock aggregate facilities for processing rock into crushed stone. The site is bordered by forested land on all sides.

Members of the public had the opportunity to submit feedback on the project no later than Aug. 5 for consideration.
