SYDNEY, N.S. — The much-anticipated opening of Cape Breton’s first Old Navy clothing store has been moved up from late spring to early winter.

“Originally it was going to be in this fall and then it got pushed (back) because of COVID,” said Mayflower Mall general manager Greg Morrison.

“We were after doing a bunch of work anyway so it was ready to go.”

The estimated 13,000 square foot location will open in the former Urban Planet spot near the mall’s food court.

The opening of the Gap owned division was first announced in January along with an original opening date of this fall. The delayed spring opening was revealed in August.

Though the general timeline of winter 2021 has now been stated as the new opening date, a specific time has been set but Morrison didn’t want to reveal that date just in case there was another delay.

As for the rest of the mall merchants, he said things are going well, despite the current economic climate.

“I can even go as far as saying as good as anticipated,” he said.

There’s no current news of any other mall openings outside of Old Navy but Morrison is hopeful that will change this winter and spring.

“Here’s some good news,” he said of Old Navy’s new opening date.

“We get a lot of negative news and we will but there will be better days ahead.”

Old Navy is known for basic, affordable clothing for men, women and children, and for its colourful marketing campaigns.

The Cape Breton location will be the fourth in Nova Scotia, joining others in Dartmouth and Halifax.
