Over the last few years, Agricola Street has gone through a significant change, becoming a destination for local shopping, eats and an evening out.

This week, Agricola Street will become home to Boyd’s Pharmasave.

“Its growth over the past few years has introduced folks from all walks of life to the neighbourhood, paving the way for businesses like ours to truly flourish,” store owner Greg Richard says of the area. “This neighbourhood is also lacking a pharmacy that provides classic front shop items, such as toiletries, personal care products, fresh and frozen groceries and snacks, and we hope we can fill this gap.”

Richard says everyone is of course welcome at the pharmacy, but there is a segment of the population he plans to cater to.

“A primary objective of ours is to improve access to 2SLGBTQ+ health care and trans-medicine to individuals within the city,” he said. “We are striving to create an inclusive and comfortable environment for patients to receive medication, therapy, advice and teaching that is free of discrimination and stigma. We will work to familiarize the community with health care concerns that the 2SLGBTQ+ community faces on a regular basis, by sharing resources with our patients and clients that highlight the 2SLGBTQ+ community.”

In addition to providing expanded services to the 2SLGBTQ+ community, Boyd’s Pharmasave will offer gender-affirming hormone administration and teaching, free injection kits for patients receiving injectable gender-affirming hormones, and assistance in navigating the health-care system and drug plans and coverage issues.

“Our services will be all-encompassing, including medication dispensing, opioid-dependence treatment, counselling and prescribing, immunizations and injections, as well as point-of-care testing,” Richard said. “Our approach to health care will be grounded in the importance of community. Taking a special interest in getting to know our patients and clients, addressing them by name and learning about their families, while also cementing ourselves in their circle of care will be paramount to our success as a community-based pharmacy in a dense urban environment.”

Richard says that entrepreneurship is part of his makeup, which he traces back to his grandfather, Boyd Waye, who owned myriad businesses in Miramichi.

“His ambition for success, commitment to his family and his community and love for people is what allowed him to find success in all of his endeavours,” Richard said of  Waye, who passed away in 1999 and is the inspiration for the pharmacy’s name.

Richard will stock products from small Maritime businesses like Receiver Coffee Co. (which will also be brewed in-store), Bad Mouth Soap, Poplar Paper Co., Halifax Paper Hearts, Briana Corr Scott, The Sweet Soaperie, C&T Candle, Saltwreck, Helen B’s, Mule Mother Books and more.

They plan to be open by the end of the month at the corner of Agricola and Charles Streets.

Here are some more retail happenings and updates:

  • Over-the-top shake, candy and ice cream shop Fun & Shakes (Flynns) is opening a second location beside Starbucks in the Hydrostone area, but this time with a smaller convenience store.
  • Holy Moly Bubble Tea was scheduled to open Monday at 114 Woodlawn Road in Dartmouth, the first dedicated bubble tea shop on the Dartmouth side of the harbour.
  • Little Oak will be wrapping up, as their lease expires at the end of April. Its neighbour Bicycle Thief will expand into the space, and Little Oak is hoping to return at a different spot at a later date.
  • Manoosh Flatbreads opened inside Dimitris Pizza on Chebucto Road late last year.
  • The space that was Heartwood on Gottingen Street near the Hydrostone will be coming back to life as Jekyll & Hyde, and I’ve heard the terms craft beer bar and gastropub.
