SYDNEY, N.S. — The Sydney Downtown Development Association (SDDA) has announced a project aimed at promoting streetscaping beautification and placemaking among its member businesses in the core of the Cape Breton Municipality’s largest community.

Last year, the association administered a pilot funding opportunity initiative that included the installation of patios, blade signage and other storefront improvements.

“This year we’ve expanded the criteria,” said SDDA executive director Michelle Wilson, in a written release.

“We will be offering to help fund important projects that will improve the exterior appearance of buildings, add attractive fixtures such as plants and signage, and allow for the addition of vital placemaking initiatives such as patios, seating, and other activities. This year we’re also extending the invitation to artists with the goal to create more public art projects within the downtown core.”

The project will be officially launched on Feb. 22. Guidelines are available to members and artists by contacting the SDDA office.
