The National Capital Region’s jobless rate shot up to 6.9 per cent in April, compared with 5.1 per cent in March.
The data reflect a net drop of 29,200 employed, offset by 16,000 fewer people in the workforce.
The figures vastly understate the real picture as data reflect a three-month moving average, which would include February’s “normal” job market.
Nationally, the jobless rate soared to 13 per cent. Statistics Canada says the country shed 1.99 million jobs in April.
More to come.
