WOODSTOCK, P.E.I. — A major change is coming for Mill River Resort.

Geoffrey Irving, president of the resort, announced on Feb. 14 that the campground at the site will no longer be operating as owners move to repurpose the property.

Chalets, similar to the one built overlooking the Mill River golf course’s practice range, will be developed on the campground property.

“We are excited to invest and to add to the choice of fixed roof accommodations at Mill River Resort,” said Irving.

“Room rental growth at the resort is strong and we’ve had numerous inquiries about additional accommodation options. “

Cheryl LeClair expressed disappointment when informed Friday of the decision. Her family was seasonal campers there for the last three years and enjoyed the experience, despite the low occupancy levels last year.

Her family had been calling to re-book their site for 2020, but were not receiving callbacks. Now, she thinks she knows why.

Bonita Sweet said her family also used to camp at Mill River.

“It was so nice to see the park full. It was like old times. It hadn’t been doing much, other than that year he had the deal and I’m thinking a deal is better than having it empty.”

Last year, the rates were raised, and her family went elsewhere.

“We will miss it,” LeClair said.

“I’m very disappointed.”

Irving said today’s visitors wants a broader range of higher-end accommodation choices.

"Mill River is planning for a cluster of larger, year-round, full-service, four-season vacation homes where owners can live on-site year-round, or seasonal and if they wish, they can put their property into a rental pool to generate income for them when they are away,” he said.

Irving said vacation homeowners will have easy access to all of the amenities at the four-star resort, including the 18-hole championship golf course, spa, aquaplex and Callaghan’s Restaurant & Bar.
