Pizza is replacing subs at the corner of University Avenue and Belvedere Avenue in Charlottetown, The Guardian has learned.
A tractor-trailor was at the Subway restaurant on Thursday and all of the furniture in the establishment had been removed.
A source told The Guardian that the location has been purchased by U.S. franchise Blaze Pizza. The restaurant specializes in making premium pizza in front of the customer, ironically, in the same fashion as Subway makes its product.
The Blaze Pizza website boasts that its product is made from scratch with healthy, artisanal ingredients on an assembly line.
“Blazing hot oven + dedicated pizzasmith + 180 seconds = fast-fire’d, perfectly crisp perfection,’’ reads a slogan on the website.
Cristina Wells, country director with Subway Canada, said in the case of the restaurant closure in Charlottetown the franchise owner decided against renewing the lease.
Wells said it just so happens the owner of this location also operates a Subway less than a kilometre away from the location at the corner of University nd Belvedere avenues.
That restaurant is located on the UPEI campus. There are also two other Subway restaurants within a five-kilometre distance.
Subway restaurant locations across Canada are locally owned and operated.
Blaze Pizza did not respond to a request for comment.
