Andrews of Summerside is preparing for a big year in 2020 with the addition of 40 new beds to accompany the facility’s 20-year anniversary.

Of the 40 new beds, 30 will be reserved for individuals requiring nursing-level care (also known as long-term care), and 10 beds will be used as community care beds until the company can obtain more licenses for nursing beds.

Alana Desroche, director of nursing at Andrews Senior Care, said the beds are expected to be open by the late-summer, and it’s likely they won’t take long to be spoken for.

“We expect our new beds will be occupied soon after we open. There is a great need for long term care beds,” she said.

“We also have a waiting list for our community care beds, so we are very pleased to be able to offer additional accommodations to those seniors who are waiting.”

Planning is well underway for the official launch, with the hiring of new nurses, caregivers, housekeepers and dietary staff.

Training for new team members will begin this spring.

Long-time Andrews of Summerside team member Cathy Perry is excited for the new additions.

Perry, who was one of the two original employees when it opened in 2000, works as the activity program co-ordinator at the facility and said more residents will mean more activities.

“We’re going to be getting an activity room as a part of the new expansion. This will give residents a better overall experience while living here.”
