SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - In what is believed to be a first in Atlantic Canada, Summerside’s Consolidated Credit Union is opening a small satellite office at the city’s sports and wellness centre, Credit Union Place.

Opening in 2019, the office will consist of a Credit Union ATM machine, a private office and a lounge area with power outlets and Wi-Fi-access. The new office will use existing, mostly empty, space off Credit Union Place’s lobby.

Sarah Miller, general manager of Consolidated Credit Union, said Thursday that the initiative is all about finding new ways engage with customers.

“We’re trying to come to you,” said Miller.

“Basically, the whole premise is: we’re giving you back time, we’re coming to you.”

There won’t be a Credit Union adviser on hand all the time, she said, but if, for whatever reason, it’s more convenient for a customer to meet at Credit Union Place they now have the space to do that. Staff may also just take some time occasionally to go work at the Credit Union Place space for the day and serve customers who just happen to be passing by.

As far as she is aware, added Miller, this is a first for credit union’s in Atlantic Canada.

“We’re the only credit union that has this kind of partnership with a major sporting centre. We’re very hands on … so it’s a really good fit.”

Last year, Consolidated Credit Union signed a recommitment deal with the City of Summerside for the naming rights for Credit Union Place until 2028.

Summerside Mayor Bill Martin welcomed the continued partnership with the financial institution.

“Major banks across the country are closing branches, particularly in smaller areas. Here you’ve got a credit union … expanding and taking services to the people,” he said.
