Abram-Village native Robert Maddix, who now lives in Charlottetown, was awarded the Jean-Robert Gauthier award on Oct. 19 in recognition of his significant volunteer contribution to the development of French-language education in Canada.
The annual award is given by the Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires in honour of the late senator and member of parliament, Jean-Robert Gauthier, who defended minority language education rights outside Québec throughout his political career.
P.E.I.’s Commission scolaire de langue française (CSLF) is pleased Maddix was granted the award.
Commission Chairman Emile Gallant said his former colleague sat as an elected school board trustee for fourteen years, including nine years as its chairman.
“During his tenure, when he represented the Évangéline region and the Charlottetown area, Robert played a key role in establishing four new French-language schools on P.E.I. – in Summerside, in West Prince, in Rustico and in Souris – as well as in the expansion of Charlottetown’s École François-Buote.”
