HAMPSHIRE – After taking a year off from competition, the Westisle Composite High School’s powerlifting teams have picked up from where they left off.
Westisle lifters captured the men’s and women’s team titles at the 2018 P.E.I. School Athletic Association’s provincial powerlifting championship at Bluefield High School earlier this week.
Of the 10 athletes on the Westisle senior girls’ team, the school had three first-place finishes, two second places and one third-place showing while Joselyn Jelley finished second overall in Wilks points – 308.7585.
Kenzie Arsenault from Three Oaks was the top women’s lifter, earning 317.0161 points. Caitlin McKenna form Montague was third with 286.1959 points.
The Westisle senior girls’ powerlifting team won the P.E.I. School Athletic Association provincial powerlifting team title by a 422-point margin. Senior boys
In the senior boys’ competition, seven of Westisle’s lifters earned medals – three firsts, two seconds and two thirds. Marcus Ferguson and Chandler Gard placed second and third overall in Wilks points (338.9276 to 337.4878 points).
Noah Manning from Souris was the top overall lifter, amassing 346.6742 points.
It was in the team competitions where Westisle showed its dominance, winning the men’s competition by 334.02 points, and the women’s competition by 422.65 points. The points from each team’s top five lifters were used in determining team standings.
The provincial meet attracted 70 lifters from eight schools.
