CHARLOTTETOWN – The Prince County Warriors have a chance to win the P.E.I. Major Bantam AAA Hockey League championship on home ice Friday.
Mike McRae’s unassisted goal with 5:23 left in overtime lifted the Warriors to a 4-3 win over the Central Attack on Thursday night. The victory gives the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five final.
The Warriors will host Game 4 at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre on Friday at 7:30 p.m. A Prince County win and the Warriors head to Newfoundland and Labrador for the Atlantic championship in early April. An Attack win sends the teams back to the Bell Aliant Centre in Charlottetown, site of Thursday’s contest, for a fifth and deciding game Saturday at 7 p.m.
In Game 3, the Attack held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Warriors defenceman Zach Biggar tied the game with 12:42 remaining in the third period, and Garrett Culleton’s goal with 2:18 left gave the Warriors their first lead – 3-2.
However, with goaltender Jack Howatt on the bench for an extra attacker, Alex Graham tied the game for the Attack with 1:15 remaining in regulation time.
Reid Vos (1-2) and Josh Lund also scored for the Attack. Matt McQuaid, John MacKinnon and Jacob Squires added assists.
Will Smith netted the other goal for the Warriors, who received another strong performance from goaltender Aiden Williams. Sid McNeill, Liam Greenan and Max Chisholm contributed helpers.
