CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The UPEI Panthers sports teams took it on the chin in Atlantic University Sport action on the road last weekend as the men’s and women’s basketball teams lost in Cape Breton and the men’s and women’s hockey teams fell to St. FX and Saint Mary’s, respectively. Meanwhilw, the men's varsity rugby team went scoreless at the national university championship in Gueloh, Ont.

Combined the Panthers teams went 0-for-8.

Basketball 

The men’s team lost the the Capers 107-54 on Saturday, then had a better 90-78 effort on Sunday led by 17 points apiece from Dakelle Brooks and Moche Wadley, who added 12 rebounds. Samy Mohamed chipped in 13 points.

Meanwhile, the women’s team dropped a close 86-82 game on Saturday then lost 88-77 on Sunday. Panthers guard Jenna Mae Ellsworth led all scorers on Sunday with 24 points, while forward Jane McLaughlin added 16 points.

The women fell to 2-4 and men are winless at 0-6.

Hockey

On Sunday, the women’s squad gave up five goals over the first two periods and cod only muster a pair of third-period scores in a 5-2 loss to St. Mary’s in Halifax, N.S.

Rachel Colle and Leah Byrne netted the Panthers goals. Siobhan Birch and and Hannah Askin each scored twice for Saint Mary’s. 

UPE fell to 2-6-4.

On Saturday, the men’s team gave up two goals each period and dropped a 6-1 decision to St. FX in Antigonish, N.S.

Gabe Guetier had the lone goal for UPEI (4-10-1), while Michael Clarke netted a hat trick for the X-Men.

Rugby

UPEI was pummelled 95-0 in its second game on Friday at the inaugural Canadian university men’s rugby championships in Guelph, Ont.

The Panthers lost 66-0 to Guelph last Thursday.

UBC won the gold medal 37-12 over the University of Victoria, while bronze went to the host University of Guelph.
