SHAWINIGAN, Que. – The Lauren Lenentine rink is off to a perfect start at the 2018 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships.
Lenentine, third stone Kristie Rogers, second stone Breanne Burgoyne and lead Rachel O’Connor rallied for a 7-6 victory to beat British Columbia’s Taylor Reese-Hansen on Sunday afternoon to improve to 3-0 (won-lost).
The B.C. representative counted singles in each of the first four ends for a 4-0 lead. After the Island squad scored back-to-back singles to cut the lead to 4-2, B.C. counted a deuce in the seventh end to go up 6-2. However, the Prince Edward Islanders refused to quit and scored three in the ninth end, and then stole a deuce in the 10th for the one-point victory.
In Sunday morning’s draw, Lenentine spotted Nunavut’s Sadie Pinksen a 3-0 advantage after two ends, before roaring back for a 12-3 win. The P.E.I. rink scored two in the third end to make it a 3-2 game, and then stole singles in the fourth and fifth ends, four in the sixth and back-to-back deuces in the eighth before the teams shook hands.
On Saturday, Lenentine opened with a 13-6 victory over Northern Ontario’s Hailey Beaudry. The turning point came in the fourth end, when Lenentine scored five to open up a 6-1 lead.
The rink from the Cornwall Curling Club returns to action on Monday with games against Tyanna Bain of the Northwest Territories and Ontario’s Emma Wallingford.
Men
In men’s play Saturday, the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox in Summerside is 1-2 after a 16-1 win over Nunavut’s Javen Komaksiutiksak.
After scoring one with hammer in the first end, MacFadyen stole four in the second and three more in the third to take early control.
The MacFadyen squad fell 8-4 to Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan on Sunday morning. A three-ender in the third end opened up a 5-1 lead for Northern Ontario.
MacFadyen dropped his opening game on Saturday 9-3 to Ontario’s Matthew Hall, who counted two three-enders with hammer and stole a deuce.
MacFadyen, third stone James Dalton, second stone Leslie Noye and lead Parker Monday, Team MacFadyen takes on Alberta’s Karsten Sturmay and Sawer Kaeser of the Northwest Territories.
