SHAWINIGAN, Que. – The Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club continued its strong performance at the 2018 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships on Monday.
Lenentine, third stone Kristie Rogers, second stone Breanne Burgoyne and lead Rachel O’Connor defeated the Northwest Territories, skipped by Tyanna Bain, 13-3 in the morning draw, and then outscored Ontario’s Emma Wallingford 9-4 in a clash of undefeated teams in evening action.
The Lenentine rink is now the only undefeated women’s team at 5-0 (won-lost). Ontario dropped to 4-1.
Lenentine built a 4-0 lead after four ends, but Ontario closed to within 4-3 after six ends. Lenentine answered by registering a deuce with hammer in the seventh, limiting Ontario to a single in the eighth and then scoring three in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Against the Northwest Territories, Lenentine scored four with last-rock advantage in the fourth end to take a 6-2 lead. The P.E.I. representative then went on to steal back-to-back three-enders and a single point in the seventh.
The teams shook hands after the Northwest Territories scored a single point in the eighth end.
The Lenentine squad plays its final game of the round robin against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mackenzie Glynn on Tuesday afternoon.
Men
P.E.I.’s Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside is 2-3 following Monday’s play.
After dropping a 7-3 decision to Alberta’s Karsten Sturmay in the afternoon draw, MacFadyen, third stone James Dalton, second stone Leslie Noye and lead Parker MacFadyen bounced back to record a 9-4 win against the Sewer Kaeser-skipped entry from the Northwest Territories on Monday night.
A three-ender by Alberta in the seventh end proved to be a turning point in that game as it opened up a 6-2 lead.
The Northwest Territories opened with a deuce in the first end, but MacFadyen answered back with single points in four straight ends to take a 4-2 lead into the fifth-end break. The Northwest Territories tied the game with singles in the sixth and seventh, but a four-ender in the eighth gave P.E.I. control.
MacFadyen’s first win – a 16-1 decision – came against Nunavut’s Javen Komaksiutiksak on Sunday night.
Team MacFadyen closes out the round robin against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Daniel Bruce on Tuesday morning.
