SLEMON PARK – It’s opening night for the Twister Sisters of the Wharf City Roller Derby League.
The Twisted Sisters will kick off the 2018 schedule at home on Saturday. The Avon River Rebel Belles from Windsor, N.S., will provide the opposition at The Plex in Slemon Park.
“The team we are playing is a new team,” said Twisted Sisters co-captain Sally Bernard. “They already played one game against one of our rivals, and they did better than we expected. It’s not going to be a walk in the park.”
The action gets underway at 7 p.m.
“I would say it’s going to be pretty fast,” said Bernard, explaining what fans can expect. “There will be some big hits. I think what people sometimes get confused on is the strategy, because there is a lot of strategy.
“It’s probably like learning how to watch football for some people. If you watch it for a little while you start to get it. We always include a little piece in the program when you come in explaining what’s happening. There are lots of refs; it’s a contact sport, so we have lots of people keeping us safe.”

The Twisted Sisters have five bouts scheduled between Saturday and Sept. 29.
“This year is going to be a great year,” predicted Twisted Sisters co-coach Lindsay McKay. “We have a really, really great roster.
“Our team has worked together a lot for the last couple of years. This year we have a lot of new players, but they all seem to be working well.”
Bernard said she expects a cautious start from the Twisted Sisters and Rebel Belles, but added most bouts end up being high-scoring affairs.
“With them being a new team, I think we are going to have to feel them out,” added Bernard. “The message for us to remember is we can’t take anything for granted.
“We will likely feel them out for the first few jams to see where we are at.”
