SUMMERSIDE – Ethan Boyd capped his high school athletic career in style.

Lauren Lilly’s is off to an impressive start, and there are still two more chapters to write before she graduates.
Boyd and Lilly were announced as the 2017-18 Three Oaks Senior High School senior athletes of the year during the recent athletic awards dinner at Summerside Intermediate School. Ben MacDougall was named the male rookie of the year, and there was no female rookie athlete of the year award presented.
“I was happy,” said Boyd in describing his reaction to being named male athlete of the year. “It was a good feeling.”
Lilly, a Grade 10 student, admitted she was caught off guard with the presentation.
“I think all my friends knew I was going to get the award because they were all looking at me,” she said. “There were a lot of people deserving of this award.”

Boyd
Boyd, who will study business at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S., and play Atlantic University Sport volleyball with the Tigers, played key roles in the Axemen winning gold medals in P.E.I. School Athletic Association senior AAA boys’ volleyball and basketball. He also competed in golf and badminton.

“He has been a crucial part of the (volleyball) team’s success, leading them to a 38-0 (won-lost) winning streak while collecting three PEISAA championship titles,” said Three Oaks athletic director Joel Arsenault. “His future university coach Dan Ota offered the following thoughts: ‘We are excited to add Ethan to the Tigers’ family, and I consider him one of the top prospects in Atlantic Canada this year. He will be a good fit with our team’s emerging young core of players. He has good physical potential to excel at the U Sports level, but what impresses me is his maturity and his commitment to learning.’”

The 18-year-old son of Steve and Kelly Boyd of Summerside also made an impact in basketball. Although he led the Axemen in many statistical categories, Arsenault pointed out that still does not give a true indication of his impact.
“Faro (Halupa) has coached 11 years at TOSH in the AAA league, and his impact on the defensive end of the floor was the best from a player that he has seen,” continued Arsenault. “He gave the team so much confidence, they were able to play the game knowing that if they made a mistake he would always have their back.”
Arsenault went on to point out Boyd’s “game took a major leap” from Grade 11 to his senior year, and stressed that was due to hard work.
“He could be found in the gym many days this past school year with a basketball in his hand,” said Arsenault. “He also brought a level of leadership that is rare.
“He was willing to be accountable for his mistakes or bad games, which were very rare, and not only with his coaches but his team, letting them know he needed to be better. This type of self-awareness from your best player forces everyone on the team to be better.”
Boyd was named a first-team all-star and the most valuable player of the provincial championships in both volleyball and basketball.
“We were expected to win in volleyball,” said Boyd. “In basketball we weren’t sure what to expect going into the season, and to win it was nice. We only had two third-year players on the team.”

Lilly
Lilly represented Three Oaks in five PEISAA sports – volleyball, basketball, badminton, softball and track and field. She set a new provincial record in juvenile girls’ javelin at the Zone 2 track and field meet.

“She is a great natural athlete,” said Sue Thomson, a member of the Three Oaks Physical Education Department. “She is focused, driven and a devoted athlete.
“Her desire to improve is evident with her effort at games and practice. Her ability to self-coach is something that sets her apart from other athletes.
“She is an intelligent athlete, she makes adjustments quickly and is relentless when pursuing her opponent.”

Looking ahead to her Grade 11 year, Lilly is looking to build off this year’s success.
“I’m going to do all the sports I did this year, and I want to improve,” said the 16-year-old daughter of Carol and Ian Lilly of Summerside. “I just want to continue building off what I’m doing, and try to make myself better.”
Thomson went on to say that Lilly’s coaches praised her attitude.
“She is an excellent teammate and a very good role model,” Thomson went on to say. “She is super quick and aggressive. . . All her coaches said she was a pleasure to coach.”

MacDougall
MacDougall wore the Axemen’s green and gold colours in basketball, volleyball, baseball and badminton.

“This young man played four sports this past year, and was a major contributor in bringing back four provincial championships,” said Halupa, who introduced the rookie male athlete of the year.

When asked his reaction after hearing his name announced as the award recipient, MacDougall replied, “It was exciting, I was happy to get it.”
As for a look ahead to the 2018-19 season, the 16-year-old son of Krista and Dale MacDougall of Summerside replied, “Hopefully we can repeat with another banner in volleyball, basketball and baseball.”
