CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Driver Simon Allard gave the fans a show Sunday night as he approached the finish line with Somewhere Fancy to win The Guardian Gold Cup and Saucer.
Allard tipped back in the sulky and raised both feet in the air as he claimed the 59th edition of the prestigious race at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
“Anytime I win a big race, I’m . . . going to do something funny – that’s me,” Allard said in the winner’s circle. “Business gets boring sometimes, but I like to spice it up.”
The decision comes, he said, when he knows the field won’t catch him.
“I turned around and I was pretty confident that I was going to win it,” he said.
Somewhere Fancy won in 1:50.4 for owner John Mehlenbacher, Oakville, Ont. Allard’s brother, Rene, does the training.
Rockin In Heaven (J. Harris) and Rose Run Quest (Marc Campbell) finished second and third, respectively.
The race was pushed from Saturday to Sunday after heavy rains postponed both Saturday’s cards.
“I don’t think it mattered,” Allard said. “That horse, he’s a stud. He’s so happy and full of himself. He’s just a great animal that races week after week. He never gets sick or tired.”
Allard said there's a connection between driver and horse.
“The horse made me feel really confident on the post parade tonight. He was like, ‘Don’t worry about it, I got this’.”
