Although veterinarians did their best to save him after he was diagnosed with cancer, Somebeachsomewhere died at the age of 13 on Sunday.

The horse, who was standing stud at Hanover Shoe Farms, in Pennsylvania, got a little colicky in November and it was discovered that the intestine was out of place. When they performed surgery to straighten it, they found a mass the size of a grape. It tested positive for cancer and the horse began chemotherapy treatments on November 18.

Somebeachsomewhere was syndicated, but the six-member Schooner Stable – Brent MacGrath, Garry Pye, Stu Rath, Reg Petitpas, Pamela Dean and Jamie Bagnell – had retained majority ownership.

The horse began his racing career in 2007 and earned more than $3.3 million in purse money in two years, winning 20 of 21 races. He was retired to Hanover Shoe Farms for breeding and in 2010, and has sired many top harness racing horses. He was named Harness Racing's Racehorse of the Decade (2000 through 2009).
