In winning wrap-up tournament

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Summerside United went undefeated en route to winning the second annual Sherwood Parkdale Rangers Under 11 Summer Wrap-Up Cup over the weekend.

The United, led by a six-goal effort from Kathryn Bernard, defeated Winsloe 7-1 in the championship game. Brennan Simpson scored the other goal for Summerside, which completed tournament play 4-0 (won-lost).

“The girls have played great all season,” offered United coach Millee McKay. “We only lost three games throughout the regular season, so this was the cherry on top and a big payoff for all of the girls’ hard work. They really showed their dedication to the sport and left it all on the pitch.”
Summerside advanced to the final with a 3-0 decision over Kensington in the semifinals. Bernard (2) and Cameron Richard accounted for the United’s scoring.
In round-robin play, Bernard (2) and Jorja Desjardins scored in the United’s 3-0 opening-game win over Eliot River Team Two in a game that was scoreless with 15 minutes remaining.
The United followed up with a 4-1 victory over Sherwood-Parkdale Team One. Desjardins (2), Bernard and Elle Pomeroy contributed goals for the winning team.
“The whole point of our season was to make sure they had fun while learning the skills they’d need as they progress in the sport,” said McKay. “If we won a game it was a perk.
“They’ve all done so well. They should be really proud of themselves.”
