MORELL – The Summerside United has advanced to the semifinals of the Subway P.E.I. Under-18 Boys Soccer League (First Division).
The United will visit the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers at the Parkman Complex on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Summerside advanced with a thrilling 2-1 quarter-final win over host Morell in penalty kicks recently.
With Morell holding a 2-1 edge after the first four penalty kicks, Peyton Lauwerijssen evened the score and keeper Julien Robichaud, who played a strong game, made a clutch save to send the game into sudden-death kicks. Bryce Corkum then confidently put the United in front, Morell missed its shot and the United emerged victorious.
Summerside, which was missing four players attending the Eastern Canadian rugby championships in Nova Scotia, took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Brandon Hastings scored off a mad scramble after a Caleb Dawson corner kick.
The score remained that way until Morell netted the equalizer in the dying seconds of regulation time. Despite being disappointed, the United bounced back after a slow start to overtime. Players like Lauwerijssen, Mat Enman, Brayden Gallant and Mathew Meister, who played midfield, challenged for the ball and caused trouble while Sean Gonzales and the speedy Corkum created havoc.
On the back end, the United’s fullback lineup was anchored by the gritty and skilled play of Dawson, Caleb Coyle, Carter McBean and Brett Atkin.
