Mulligan Cup begins Friday

CORNWALL – The Terry Fox Sports Complex soccer field will be a busy spot this weekend.

Eight soccer games – all part of the annual Mulligan Cup – will take place from Friday evening through to Sunday.

The Holland Hurricanes and UPEI Panthers’ women kick things off on Friday at 5 p.m. The Holland College men face the Panthers immediately after at 7 p.m.

The Mulligan Cup is an invitational tournament that provides an excellent opportunity for coaches to make final roster decisions.

Former coach

This fifth annual tournament honours Vince Mulligan, the ageless UPEI varsity soccer and hockey coach throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The tournament has proved to be a great way to kick off the season and showcase the UPEI men’s and women’s soccer teams to their supporters.

“I really look forward to this time of year when we get a chance to look at the new athletes in camp,” said Mulligan. “You always go into a new year with great expectations, and you can see it in the athletes' eyes and in their actions on the field. That's what makes this tournament so great to watch.”

Men’s team

Meanwhile, the Holland College men are on the road in Antigonish on Saturday, where they’ll meet Cape Breton University for an exhibition game at St. Francis Xavier University at 2:30 p.m.
