Holland Hurricanes' Roberts, Sanoh nab major soccer awards

HALIFAX – Briar Roberts and Ibra Sanoh were presented with two major awards on Friday night.

The star soccer players with the Holland Hurricanes were named the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) players of the year for the second straight year.

The awards were presented in conjunction with the ACAA championships, which begin on Saturday. Both Holland College teams go in as the No. 1 seeds, with the women taking on the fourth-ranked UNBSJ Seawolves at 10 a.m., and the men facing the host Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics at 3 p.m.

All games can be seen live at www.acaatv.ca through Bell Aliant TV1.

KRHS grad

Roberts, a graduate of Kinkora Regional High School (KRHS), is in her third season with the Hurricanes.

After she was also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Academic All-Canadian last season, Roberts had increased offensive production as she led the ACAA with 15 goals and eight assists in 2016.

Commitment

“Her commitment to being a better player did not end there as she was a two-way player who led by example in 2016, putting the team above herself,” read a media release that also goes on to note that she continued to provide a relentless offensive presence despite drawing attention from the opposition’s top defensive players.

Third year

Sanoh, also in his third year at Holland College, led the ACAA with 12 goals, including three game-winning tallies. He also led the way in assists.

“It has been hard to find a flaw in his game,” said the media release. “Technically, physically and tactically, he has been dominant and will go down as one of the best players to ever wear the Hurricanes’ jersey.”

Consistency

Sanoh was also praised for his consistency.

“He has always had an impact on the game, whether it is scoring the big goal, setting up his teammates, winning back the ball or creating space for those around him,” continued the media release. “Over time, he has grown into a leader, inspiring his teammates to be better.”

Keeper of the year

The Hurricanes’ Nicole McInnis was recognized as the ACAA female keeper of the year.

McInnis started all 11 regular-season games, posted six shutouts and gave up just four goals.
