West Prince boys, Kensington girls capture Provincial Cup championships

CHARLOTTETOWN – Two Prince County teams won provincial soccer titles on Saturday.

The West Prince Storm under-17 boys and Kensington under-16 girls claimed the gold medals in the P.E.I. Soccer Association Subway Provincial Cup championships at the Sherwood Soccer Complex.

Following is a recap of all the division finals:


Under-17 Boys Division 1

West Prince Storm 1

Stratford 0 (OT)

Logan Vandervelden scored in the first half of extra time to lift the Storm to victory.

Declan MacLeod provided West Prince with shutout goalkeeping for 90 minutes plus extra time.


Under-16 Girls Division 1

Kensington 3

Summerside Team Two United 0

Kelsey MacLean opened the scoring, and Jillian Lawless connected on a penalty kick to stake Kensington to a 2-0 lead.

MacLean then scored her second goal of the afternoon to put the game out of reach.

Shelby Sudsbury, coming off an outstanding performance in Kensington’s 1-0 semifinal win over Eliot River on Thursday night, recorded the shutout.


Under-18 Girls Division 1

Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals 4

Morell Strikers 3

Victoria Barbour scored a hat trick, including two goals in the first half and the winner in the 54th minute, to pace the Royals.

Bailey Andrews scored late in the first half to send the Royals into halftime ahead 3-2.

Emma Drake (2) and Katie Flynn countered for Morell.


Under-14 Boys Division 1

Eastern Eagles Team Two 3

RC United 1 (PK))

The regular-season champion Eagles needed penalty kicks to get by RC United.

The teams were tied 1-1 after extra time, and the Eagles went on to outscore the United 3-1 in penalty kicks.

Cameron Ralph opened the scoring in the first half for the United, but Jacob MacEachern answered for the Eagles in the 70th minute.


Under-14 Girls Division 1

Morell Strikers 3

Summerside Team One United 1 (OT)

Ashley Livingston and Cyd MacSwain scored in the second half of extra time to lift the Strikers to victory.

Emma Sweeney opened the scoring for Morell, and the United’s Erin Arsenault-Gallant scored with five minutes remaining to send the game to extra time.


Under-14 Girls Division 2

Central Queens Clippers 2

Eliot River Ramblers 1

The Clippers received two quick goals in the first half from Jennifer Stewart and Jaydn Nicholson in the 21st and 23rd minutes to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

Becky Buchanan scored with 13 minutes remaining to get the Ramblers back within a goal, but that was as close as they would get.
