SUMMERSIDE – Kensington overcame a rough start in the Ombrelle Active Start Soccer Fest Summerside United annual under-12 kickoff tournament.
After dropping its opening game 2-0 to the Eliot River Ramblers on Friday, Kensington posted three wins and a tie in the next four games to claim the Girls Premier Division. Kensington capped its march to the title with a 2-1 win over the Ramblers in very warm conditions on the turf at Eric Johnston Field on Sunday afternoon.
“The girls played good, we had really good goaltending all weekend (from Kylie MacLellan),” said Kensington coach Blair Murphy. “It was really hot, the girls moved the ball well. . .
“Eliot River is a good team and we just got a lucky break and put one in. Hats off to the girls. They played well.”
That lucky break came in the eighth minute as Heidi Lauwerijssen scored the game’s lone goal. After that Kensington played strong defensively to preserve the lead.
“They (defenders) controlled the ball up the wings like we talked about in practice, and subbed some people on and off to try and keep them fresh,” said Murphy. “Hats off to them again, and when we were in trouble Kylie, our goalie, bailed us out many times.”
Kensington, which failed to make the cross-overs of the recent Eliot River tournament, concluded round-robin play on Saturday with a 3-0 win over the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals and tied the Summerside Thunder 2-2. Kensington then edged the Thunder 1-0 in the semifinals on a goal by Lauwerijssen. Ironically, that goal came in the eighth minute as well, and MacLellan earned the shutout.
Eliot River punched its ticket to the final by doubling the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals 4-2 in the other semifinal. Paige Mallett, Louisa McMurrer, Maddison Thompson and Mary MacDonald scored for Eliot River, which led 4-1 at halftime.
Emma MacKenzie and Jenna Frizzell countered for Charlottetown.
In the bronze-medal game, Ashlyn Pridham scored twice for the Thunder and Hilarie Gaudet added a single goal in a 3-0 win over the Royals.
Avery Simpson earned the shutout.
