CHARLOTTETOWN – The Crapaud Community Curling Club duo of Calvin Smith and Lauren Ferguson beat Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt and Nick Johnston team 6-4 on Sunday afternoon to win the 2018 P.E.I. mixed doubles curling championship.
Smith and Ferguson will represent P.E.I. at the Canadian mixed doubles curling championship in Leduc, Alta., from March 29 to April 1.
Smith/Ferguson won two of the three modified triple-knockout sections, which gave them a “double life” in the two-game championship round. A win in either game would have given them the championship, but they did it on the first try.
In the final game, at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, they built up a 4-0 lead after three ends, taking a single, and stealing another single and a double. Howatt/Johnston came back with a pair of singles, and the teams traded deuces in ends six and seven, but the Cornwall team ran out of rocks in the final end.
