KINKORA – Two Grade 12 students at Kinkora Regional High School (KRHS) have been recognized for their passion to the athletic program.
Liam Arsenault and Maggie Linkletter were recently announced as the 2017-18 winners of the KRHS School Spirit Awards.

“The school spirit award is given to a student-athlete, in the opinion of the coaching staff, who best highlights school sports here at Kinkora Regional High School,” explained KRHS athletic director Trent Ranahan. “The components are fair play, dedication, leadership, positive attitude and contributions to the athletic program as a whole.”

Linkletter
Linkletter represented the Blazers in cross-country, volleyball, high school hockey and track and field. She also played with the Mid-Isle Wildcats, champions of the P.E.I. Midget AAA Female Hockey League.
“Ever since Maggie came into the school she has been such a positive person,” said Ranahan. “No matter the season, and it doesn’t matter what sport she is playing, regardless how the team is doing, she always has that consistent, positive attitude.
“She is very fun to be around and in return we see that spill over to our other younger athletes. They learn about various things, but what is important is they have fun doing so, and Maggie is certainly a positive role model for what a Blazer is – hard working, dedicated, respectful and we have fun.”
The 18-year-old daughter of Kathy and Wayne Linkletter of Bedeque said she was “really happy” to receive the award.

“I just love to have fun when I play sports,” said Linkletter, who touched on one special memory representing the Blazers. “I’d say winning gold at spring volleyball this year, because it was the exact same girls that won gold in Grade 10.”

Linkletter, who has a goal of becoming a nurse, will study sciences at UNB.

Arsenault
Arsenault competed in soccer and high school hockey for KRHS.
“Pretty ecstatic,” reacted Arsenault to receiving the award. “It is a big honour. It was nice to receive this one.”
Ranahan praised reliability and maturity of the 17-year-old son of Shannan and Derik Arsenault of Seven Mile Bay.
“Liam has always been a student-athlete you could always count on,” continued Ranahan. “No matter the situation, Liam was always willing to step up to the plate and do whatever it took to help his team.
“He’s also very dependable and enthusiastic about school sports. Each and every year, and each and every day, he wants to come back and do what he can to contribute to Kinkora athletics.”
Arsenault and Madeline Hamill were presented medals for having the top averages as part of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) outstanding student-athlete awards.
Arsenault, who will study engineering at UNB, admitted that he has mixed emotions about leaving KRHS.

“I spent a lot of time playing a lot of different sports, and it’s sad that it’s over,” he concluded.
