ALBERTON

The P.E.I. Provincial Mixed Curling Championship is going to continue into Monday.

Mitchell Schut and his Cornwall Curling Club team of lead Sydney Howatt, second stone Nicholas Johnston and mate Sierra Clyke made sure of that with a 5-4 win over previously unbeaten Tyler MacKenzie and his Charlottetown Curling Complex team of Jodi Murphy, Doug MacGregor and Aleya Quilty Saturday afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club. Schut scored two with hammer in the eighth after MacKenzie scored all of his team’s points in the sixth end.

Schut will face the Jamie Newson rink from Silver Fox and Charlottetown in Sunday’s 10 a.m. “B” section final of the nine-team modified triple knock-out championship. Newson and his rink of Miranda Ellis, Andrew MacDougall and Melissa Morrow, lost the “A” section final 6-1 to MacKenzie Saturday morning.

The only way the championship could have ended during Sunday’s draws was with a team winning all three section finals, but MacKenzie’s loss to Schut means that’s no longer a possibility.

Only six teams remain in contention and that number will be trimmed to four after Sunday’s 10 a.m. draw.

In other games on Sunday’s 10 am. draw, MacKenzie plays Glen Betts and his Maple Leaf and Western Community Clubs team of Iva Griffin, Ian MacMillan and Bobbi-Jean Boylan, and Corey Miller from Silver Fox plays Daryl MacDonald from Western in “C” section quarter-finals.

Rounding out team Miller are Elaina Arsenault, Patrick Ramsay and Sandy Miller. With MacDonald are Cheryl Bell, John Ellsworth and Meaghan Henderson.

Saturday results:

10 a.m.

Schut 9, Miller 6; MacKenzie 6, Newson 1 and Freddy Fraser, Western 5, Paul Morrison, Montague 3.

2 p.m.

MacDonald 6, Fraser 5, Schut 5, MacKenzie 4 and Calvin Smith, Crapaud 9, Morrison 3.

6 p.m.

Miller 10, Smith 2; Newson 10, MacDonald 3 and Betts 8, Fraser 5.

There are draws Sunday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and there will be at least a 10 a.m. draw on Monday and, if necessary, a winner-take-all final at 2 p.m.

The 2018 champion will represent P.E.I. at the Canadian championship at Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg from November 5 to 10.
