MONCTON, N.B. – The Canadian Hockey League won the CIBC Canada Russia Series, but it took a shootout Thursday in Moncton.

Russia won the final game of six-game series 2-1 over the Quebec Major Junior Hockey to tie the series 3-3. Russia split two games each with the Western, Ontario and Quebec leagues.

Victoria Tigres forward Maxime Comtois scored the only goal of the shootout to determine the series winner.

Vitalii Abramov, who was traded Thursday by the Gatineau Olympiques to the Tigres, scored the game-winning goal for Russia with three minutes to play. German Rubtsov, who plays for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, recorded the assist.

Alexey Polodyan from Andrey Altybarmakyan opened the scoring eight minutes into the game while Pascal Laberge from Jocktan Chainey and Peter Abbandonato tied it two minutes later.

Alexey Melnichuk made 23 saves for the win while Samuel Harvey stopped 31 shots in the loss.

Charlottetown Islanders defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph and coach Jim Hulton were part of the Quebec league squad, which also included Summerside native Noah Dobson, a blue-liner, and former Isles forward Shawn Boudrias.
