SUMMERSIDE – The Darcy Robertson rink from Winnipeg rallied late to even their record at the 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar Pre-Trials curling event on Tuesday morning.
Robertson scored once in the ninth end with hammer to tie the game 6-6, and then stole a single point in the 10th end for a 7-6 victory over Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Robertson improved to 1-1 (won-lost) while McCarville is 0-1.
In men’s action, eight teams saw their first action at Eastlink Arena in Draw 3.
Jason Gunnlaugson of Winnipeg counted three deuces en route to a 7-2 win over Saskatoon’s Colton Flasch.
Charley Thomas of Edmonton scored twice with last-rock advantage in the 10th end to outlast William Lyburn of Winnipeg 6-5.
Jean-Michel Ménard of Saint-Romuald, Que., scored three in the seventh end, and stole a deuce in the eighth en route to an 8-5 decision over Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton.
Dayna Deruelle of Brampton, Ont., outscored Pat Simmons of Winnipeg 9-5. With the score tied 5-5, Deruelle scored three in the ninth with hammer and stole a single point in the 10th.
Tuesday’s action also includes draws at noon, 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. Seven Mile Bay native Adam Casey and his Regina-based rink will open against Halifax’s Jamie Murphy (0-1) at 4 p.m.
The Road to the Roar features 28 teams – 14 men and 14 women. Two men’s and two women’s rinks will advance to the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Ottawa from Dec. 2 to 10 that will determine Canada’s four-person curling teams for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.
