FREDERICTON – The Red Rock 17-under female team came up short on during the Round of 16 at the recent Elites of the East volleyball tournament in Fredericton, N.B., losing in the third set 15-13 to the Truro Cougars.
The Island squad used strong serving to jump out to a quick 17-4 lead, but Truro did the same and tied the match 24-24. The two teams continued a close battle, with Red Rock taking the first set 26-24. The Cougars clawed their way to the top in the second winning 25-22. The third was a back-and-fourth battle. With a tie at 13-13, a mishit ball by Red Rock, and then a well-placed tip by Truro, spelled the end of the weekend for P.E.I. team.
Highlights of the weekend included playing the Moncton Fuzion, who won the tournament. Despite losing 2-0, the second set was close with a score of 25-21. Red Rock also played the Sea Hawks from Newfoundland and Labrador, losing 2-0, and dropped a 2-1 match against the Sackville Sonics.
Red Rock will continue to train for the next three weeks, before playing the 18-under Kensington Crusaders, and then head to the Canadian nationals in Edmonton, Alta., in the middle of May.
