Panthers win back-to-back games to close out women's basketball regular season

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The UPEI Panthers are going to the women’s basketball playoffs on a winning note.

The Panthers completed the sweep of the final home two games of the regular season by defeating the Dalhousie Tigers 59-43 on Saturday. They finished the regular season 11-9, two points up Saint Mary’s for third place in the Atlantic University Sport conference.

UPEI will play the UNB Varsity Reds in the quarter-final Friday at 3 p.m. They split four games this season.

Carolina Del Santo had 20 rebounds, 14 points, two blocks and an assist to pace the Panthers on Saturday. Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 19 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals while Kiera Rigby had 12 points to finish third in conference scoring at 18.4. Karla Yepez contributed 10 rebounds off the bench.

Sophie Gaube led the Anna Stammberger-coached Tigers with 10 points off the bench as Dal (5-15) missed the playoffs.

The Panthers held quarter leads of 18-8, 36-19 and 44-35.
