Top U12 softball teams playoff at 9:30 a.m. Sunday

The play-offs for the Eastern Canadian Under 12 softball championships get underway Sunday morning in O’Leary with boys teams seeing action on Jeff Ellsworth Field and the top four girls teams finishing out the tournament on Ellis Field.

As there are only four boys’ teams in the tournament, they all make the play-offs. The top boys’ team, East Hants Nova Scotia Mastadons, plays the second place team, Brookfield, NS in the first versus second page play-off game at 9:30 a.m. with the winner advancing right to the 4 p.m. championship final. Third place Alberton will play fourth place O’Leary at 11:30 a.m. The loser will be done while the winner lives on to play at 1:30 p.m. against the loser of the 9:30 a.m. game. The winner of that game advances to the final.

East Hants nailed down first place with a 5-0 win over Brookfield on Saturday while Alberton earned third with a 9-1 win over O’Leary.

In the girls tournament, the two New Brunswick entries are first and second. The Southern Black Bears finished at 6-0, followed by the Kennebecasis Valley Dynamite at 5-1. The Black Bears won the New Brunswick head-to-mead math-up 2-0 on Saturday.

Nova Scotia, however ended up in third place with a 3-3 record after round robin and in the playoffs while the Reds finished 2-4, out of the play-offs in sixth place.

Nova Scotia and Tignish, both finished with 3-3 records to nail down the final two girls’ playoff spots. Nova Scotia got third place because of their round-robin win over Tignish.

The host O’Leary Reds and the West Royalty Force both finished play with 204 records, but it was West Royalty that got fifth place as beat O’Leary in their round-robin matchup. Summerside finished seventh with a 0-6 record.

So the Southern Black Bears and KV Dynamite play in the first verses second matchup at 9:30 a.m. Tignish and West Royalty will play off at 11:30 a.m. with the winner of that game playing the loser of the 9:30 a.m. game at 1:30 p.m. The winner of the 1:30 p.m. game will play the winner of the 9:30 am. Game at 4 p.m. to determine the overall champion.

East Hants NS 5, Brookfield 0 and Alberton 9, O’Leary 1.
