The Timberwolves quarterback scored three touchdowns, including a game-clinching score late in the fourth quarter, to lead his team to a 22-14 win over the Summerside Waterwise Spartans.

The Timberwolves improved to 3-0 (won-lost) in the Papa John's P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League season, and the Spartans dropped to 1-2.

Close game

The game, played at Eric Johnston Field, was close throughout as the Timberwolves took an 8-6 advantage into halftime, and Summerside closed to within 16-14 with just over two minutes remaining.

Summerside attempted an onside kick, and almost made the recovery, but the Timberwolves would drive deep into the Spartans’ end, and Newson would score on a three-yard run to put the game out of reach.

A key statistic in the game was turnovers as the Spartans turned the ball over five times.

Scoring

Newson opened the scoring with a running touchdown, and the converted kick gave Cornwall an 8-0 advantage. The Spartans scored late in the half as quarterback Riley Molyneaux hooked up with Ethan Haakman on a 35-yard touchdown pass, but Summerside missed the all-important two-point convert kick.

In the second half, another running touchdown by Newson gave Cornwall a 16-6 lead, but Breton Brown scored on a 50-yard run and a converted kick made it 16-14.

The Spartans’ next game is in Souris on Sunday, Oct. 8. The opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
