CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics took over in the second half en route to an 89-74 victory over the Holland College Hurricanes Sunday in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball action.
The Mystics led 21-19 after the first quarter, but trailed 49-42 at the half. They quickly turned that around, outscoring the ‘Canes 29-6 in the third to take a 71-55 advantage to the fourth quarter.
Kate Gallant and Marika Williams each had 21 points in the win while Gallant added 10 rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist. All five Mystics starters scored 11 or more points while rookie Nikki Arsenault, of Summerside, had four points, eight rebounds, two steals and an assist off the bench.
Breauna Rivoli led Holland College with 20 points while Lexi MacInnis had 18 points, six rebounds, four steals, an assist and a block. Tyleigha Nelson score 13 points while Jayla Verney added 10.
The win completed the weekend sweep for the Mystics, who defeated the Hurricanes 85-76 Saturday at the Eastlink Centre.
Gallant scored 35 points in the win while Arsenault had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
MacInnis scored 17 points and added 11 rebounds to pace the Hurricanes. Rivoli and Verney each scored 14 while Nelson and Ty’Keiia Beals both contributed 10.
The game was tied 21-21 after the first quarter while the Mystics took a 39-35 lead to halftime and a 56-51 advantage to the fourth.
The first-place Mystics improved to 13-1 while the third-place Hurricanes are 10-4.
Men’s
The Hurricanes men’s squad swept the Mystics with wins of 101-62 on Saturday and 112-88 on Sunday.
The ‘Canes held a slim 18-16 lead after the first quarter on Saturday before breaking it open in the second to lead 50-30 at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to build on the lead making it 74-49 through three and winning the fourth quarter by 14 for the win.
Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley recorded a double-double (21 points and 17 rebounds) to lead the ‘Canes.
Marcus Dawkins (17 points, five rebounds, six assists, one block), Connor Therrian (13 points, three rebounds, one assist), Jace Colley (12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, one block) and Michael Kayeye (11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks) were the starters that reached double figures.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes trailed 26-22 before bouncing back in the second quarter to take a 52-46 lead at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to build on the their momentum and led 84-70 after three before winning the fourth quarter by 10 points.
Chase Bowden had a team-high 24 points along with seven rebounds, three assists, four steals and four blocks in the win. Whyley had 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Colley contributed 18 points and seven rebounds while Kayeye had 13 points. Antonio Kostakos and Kyle Lefave both reached double figures off the bench recording 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The first-place ‘Canes improve to 15-1 while the Mystics fall to 10-7.
