Maxwell, Session NBL earn awards

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.  – A pair of Island Storm players received year-end awards from the National Basketball League of Canada on Friday.

Du’Vaughn Maxwell received the defensive player of the year honours while Franklin Session was the newcomer of the year.
Maxwell, a six-foot-seven forward who played at Hampton University, averaged 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.4 steals while averaging 18.5 points.
Session, a six-foot-two guard who played collegiately at Cal State-Los Angeles, became a scoring linchpin for the Storm. He averaged 20 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists and 1.85 steals.

St. John’s Edge guard Carl English was named the MVP and Canadian of the year after averaging 23.9 points per game.

Halifax Hurricanes bench boss Mike Leslie was named coach of the year after leading his squad to a 27-13 record. He is a former assistant coach with the Storm.

Niagara River Lions forward Guillaume Payen-Boucard took home top rookies honours after averaging 13.6 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Hurricanes guard Ta’Quan Zimmerman was named the sixth man and Jeff Dunlap of the Edge was named the Ian Fowler executive of the year.
