Huskies score three in third to defeat Panthers in men's hockey

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Aaron Berisha scored the winner 3:44 into the third period as the Saint Mary’s Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 5-2 in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action.

Hunter Garlent scored twice, including an empty-net goal, while Alexandar Peters and Bronson Beaton added singles in the victory during Panthers alumni night at MacLauchlan Arena.

Kensington’s Thomas Stavert had three assists while singles went to former Charlottetown Islanders Jake Coughler and Mark Trickett, Steven Shipley, Anthony Repaci, Taylor Burke and Garlent.

Cody Payne and Kameron Kielly scored for UPEI with assists to Beau McCue, Darcy Ashley and Beni Berisha, who is the older brother of Huskies forward Aaron.

Cole Cheveldave made 18 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak stopped 22 shots in the loss.

Saint Mary’s was 2-for-5 on the power play and was able to kill all three of the Panthers attempts.

Saint Mary’s led 1-0 after the first, but the Panthers scored twice 3:15 into the second to take a 2-1 lead. Garlent tied it with 7:45 left in the period to send the game to the third tied 2-2.

The Huskies improved to 16-7-1 while the Panthers are 6-17-1 and two points up on Dalhousie for fifth place in the seven-team conference.

Women

Mary Worndl scored two power-play goals to lead the Saint Mary’s Huskies to a 4-0 win over the UPEI Panther Saturday in AUS women’s hockey action in Montague.

Hannah Askin had a goal and an assist while Nicole Schofield also scored in the victory and Rebecca Clark stopped 13 shots for the shutout.

Brooke Murphy had two assists and Kiana Wilkinson one as Saint Mary’s built 2-0 and 3-0 period leads.

Camille Scherger allowed four goals on 25 shots in the loss.

Saint Mary’s was 2-for-5 on the power play while UPEI was 0-for-1.

The Huskies (14-3-1) trail top-ranked St. FX (15-1-2) by three points while UPEI (4-9-6) is sixth in the seven-team conference.

The Panthers travel to Antigonish, N.S., Sunday for a 3 p.m. game with St. FX.
