CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes men’s basketball team earned two more wins in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) play as they gear up for the playoffs.
The ‘Canes beat the Dal AC Rams 112-83 on Sunday and the UNBSJ Seawolves 112-93 on Monday.
The wins improve the ‘Canes to 19-1 on the season. The No. 1 seed will receive a bye to the ACAA semifinal where they will face the lowest remaining seed after the quarter-final games on March 2.
The Hurricanes wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host the St. Thomas Tommies at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men).
Men
The ‘Canes men’s squad jumped out to a 33-22 lead after the first quarter against the Rams and grew it to 60-37 at the half and 89-60 heading to the fourth.
Jace Colley led the ‘Canes in scoring with 21 points along with seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. Connor Therrien came off the bench to score 19 points while Michael Kayeye (18), Kyle Lefave (14) and Antonio Kostakos (11) all reached double figures.
Against the Seawolves, the ‘Canes held quarter leads of 25-23, 50-45 and 77-67.
Three players reached double figures in scoring for the ‘Canes led by Colley with 25. King added 24 off the bench while Dawkins scored 20. Colley added eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
The Rams fall to 4-16 and are tied for sixth while the Seawolves (8-11) are in fifth place.
Women
The Hurricanes women suffered a 71-52 loss Monday at the hands of the Seawolves.
The ‘Canes fell behind 19-14 after the first quarter and would trail 39-22 at the half and 60-42 heading to the fourth.
Jayla Verney had a team-high 15 points for the ‘Canes along with five rebounds and two steals.
Lexi MacInnis added 13 points and five rebounds while Tyleigha Nelson had 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Alyssa Canning and Keionia Beals tied Nelson for the team-high six rebounds.
The loss drops the ‘Canes record to 11-6 on the season which has them in third place. The Seawolves (3-13) are in sixth place.
These two teams will meet again in less than two weeks in one of the ACAA quarter-finals on Friday, March 2, in Fredericton, N.B.
