CHARLOTTETOWN P.E.I. - The Holland College Hurricanes women’s hockey team earned 3-2 and 4-1 wins in a two-game sweep of the Acadia Axewomen in Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League action last weekend in Charlottetown and Summerside.
On Sunday in Summerside, the Hurricanes opened the scoring with 50 seconds remaining in the first period when Katie Parkman banged home a rebound.
The Hurricanes added another in the second when Melissa French redirected a point shot from Ryleigh McPherson to make it 2-0.
A third period goal by Chelsey Wilkins for Acadia closed the Hurricanes lead to 2-1 before Sam Higgins scored just 23 seconds later for a Holland College 3-1 edge.
Higgins added an empty net goal to close out the game.
Mackenzie Koughan improved to 5-1-0 this season after stopping 16-of-17 shots, while Jordan Archibald stopped 16-of-20 shots for Acadia in the loss.
Saturday, it was scoreless until Acadia’s Keisha Kane scored a breakaway goal less than two minutes into the third period.
The ‘Canes tied things 1-1 less than three minutes later on Nicolle Derry’s marker
The scoring continued with 10:10 remaining when Hillary Dort gave Acadia the 2-1 lead.
The ‘Canes knotted the game 2-2 with 4:08 remaining when Derry fired a shot from the blue-line that found the back of the net after deflecting off a defender’s stick, the crossbar and the goaltenders back.
Then with 1:46 remaining Katie-Lynn Cummiskey tucked the puck into the Acadia goal to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead and the eventual win.
Koughan earned the win while Archibald suffered the defeat.
The Hurricanes improved to 7-3 and moved into first place in standings, leading UNB (6-2-0) by two points. Acadia fell to 1-9.
The Hurricanes host the UNB on Saturday at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague as part of a celebration of female hockey. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
As part the day, UPEI Panthers host the St. Mary’s Huskies at 3 p.m., then the Kings County Kings take on the Western Wind in girl’s midget AAA action at 5:20 p.m.
On Sunday, Holland College and UNB battle, at 3 p.m., at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
