SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals have added a new goaltender.
The Caps acquired the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) rights of goaltender Dominik Tmej and a sixth-round draft choice in 2019 from the Valley Wildcats in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2018, a second-round selection in 2019 and a fifth-round choice in 2019.
“(Tmej) comes highly recommended,” said Caps general manager Pat McIver.
Tmej, 18, saw action in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League the past two seasons. He had a 4-14-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) record, a 5.23 goals-against average (GAA) and an .856 save percentage in 24 regular-season games with the Moncton Wildcats last season. In four games with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan this year, Tmej had two losses, an overtime loss, 4.01 GAA and .868 save percentage.
“We like him as a goalie, we always did,” said McIver, who noted the Caps scouted Tmej two years ago. “His age is kind of key for us too. He’s a ’99, he has a couple of years left and expressed interest in coming to Summerside.
“It’s a good fit for us all around. We think he’s going to be able to help us.”
Tmej joins Rett Rook (3-4-1, 4.47 GAA, .850 save percentage) and Brayden Lachance (1-1-0, 2.53 GAA. .930 save percentage) in the Caps’ crease.
When asked if he expects to make a move soon to address the three-goaltender situation, McIver commented, “I would think we probably won’t stay with three for a long period of time.”
