KENSINGTON – Clark Webster and Luke Beck have been recognized by the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.
Webster, the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild team captain, is the 2017-18 winner of the Luc Bourdon Award as the league’s top defenceman.
Beck, in his second season behind the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride bench, has been chosen as coach of the year.
Webster, who was also named a first-team league all-star, set what is believed to be a Wild franchise record for points by a defenceman – 36 – in his third and final season. The 17-year-old son of Jason and Tara Webster of Kelvin Grove finished with 12 goals and 24 assists in 32 regular-season games. Ten of those goals, however, came on the power play.
Webster has been drafted by the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League). He has played in seven regular-season games with the Caps as an affiliated player this year.
Bourdon, played 36 games in the National Hockey League, died in a motorcycle crash in May 2008 at the age of 21. A native of Shippagan, N.B., Bourdon played in the league with the Miramichi Rivermen during the 2002-03 season.
Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride head coach Luke Beck has been selected as the coach of the year in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.
Beck and assistant coaches Jason Gallant and Travis McIsaac guided the Pride to a record of 17-13-5 (won-lost-overtime losses). The Pride completed the regular season on a six-game winning streak.
Caleb Kean of the Saint John Vitos was named the most valuable player of the regular season. Kean led the league in scoring with 61 points and 34 assists.
All-stars
Wild forward Frank Fortin received the award as the league’s top goalscorer with 28.
Fortin, who had a team-leading 51 points, including 23 assists, was also named to the league’s first all-star team.
Evan Gallant was recognized as a second-team all-star forward. Gallant, who is also in his third season with the Wild, accumulated 33 points – 23 goals and 10 assists – in 35 regular-season games.
Pride forward Connor McGregor, who is in his final year of midget eligibility, earned a spot on the second all-star team. McGregor led the Pride in scoring with 40 points – 23 goals and 17 assists – in 33 contests.
