The two teams posted wins on opening night of the 2017-18 Island Junior Hockey League regular season on Sunday. The Vipers edged arch-rival Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings 4-3, and the Metros doubled the Eastern Maniacs 4-2.

At Community Gardens, the hometown Vipers scored four unanswered goals to open up a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes, before the Abram-Village-based Red Wings made things interesting in the third period.
Cameron Visser made 30 saves to earn the goaltending win as the Vipers received goals from four different players – Ryan McKenna, Keegan Buchanan, Parker Ronahan and Spencer Sherren. Campbell Gallant (2), Nick Bouchey, CJ McCardle, Jacob Stewart, Garrett Murray and Lucas Holman chipped in with assists.
For the Red Wings, who trailed 2-1 after the opening period, Jason Gallant, Silas Handrahan and Connor Morrissey found the back of the net. Tristan Gallant (2), Lucas Beaulieu, Chasse Gallant and Brydon Smith added helpers.
Western goaltender Bronson Banks faced 29 shots.
Metros 4 Maniacs 2
At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, Tanner Lund netted a brace while Alex Hall and Taylor Runighan were each credited with two assists to lead the visiting Metros.
Cale Pierce and Jordan Birt rounded out the scoring for the Metros, who built period leads of 1-0 and 4-0. Other assists went to Dylan MacDonald, Pat McGuigan and Curtis McGregor.
Nathan Sanderson and Eddie Jenkins answered for the Maniacs. Mike MacGregor, Cole Jenkins, Spencer Compton and Jonathan Arsenault.
Winning goaltender was Sam Walsh, and Cam Duffy took the loss. Each team recorded 30 shots on goal.
