The 27-year-old native of Borden-Carleton has been named an assistant coach with the Woodstock Slammers of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League). It’s the same organization Tremere played three full seasons with from 2008 to 2011.
“I had a really good career there as a player,” said Tremere, who earned a reputation as a steady and hard-nosed stay-at-home defenceman. “The community is great, and as a player they welcomed me with open arms.
“That team has a lot of community support, and I’m really looking forward to joining the team in a coaching capacity.”
Tremere will work under former NHLer Sandy McCarthy, who was promoted to head coach after Fabian Joseph stepped down earlier this week. McCarthy served as an associate coach under Joseph.
“The organization contacted me to see if there was any interest in coming back and joining them in a coaching capacity,” said Tremere in explaining how things unfolded with the Slammers in a phone interview with the Journal Pioneer. “We had a few conversations with management and Sandy.
“Everything worked out, and decided to join them as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.”
Opportunity
Tremere is looking forward to the opportunity to work with McCarthy, who played in a combined 759 National Hockey League regular-season and playoff games with Calgary, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Carolina, New York Rangers and Boston from the 1993-94 season through the 2003-04 campaign.
“Sandy has a wealth of experience as a player and coach, and his hockey knowledge is extremely high,” said the son of Ted and Shelley Tremere. “It will be a very good opportunity for me to learn the game from him, and try to improve myself as a coach.”
Tremere, who has previous coaching experience in minor hockey, admits “it will certainly be a transition” going from player to coach at the junior A level.
“I’m sure there will be lots of times I wish I could get back on the ice,” chuckled Tremere, who played one season at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont., following his junior career.
Tremere, a 2008 graduate of Kinkora Regional High School, said he and McCarthy have already had “conversations of the type of team” they hope to build.
“We agree on a lot of things,” said Tremere, who graduated from UPEI with a bachelor-of-science degree in 2015. “We are excited about the upcoming year, and putting on an exciting product on the ice.”
