The UPEI Panthers have added former Barrie Colts centre Mitchell Theoret.
He played the first half of this season with EHC Bayreuth in the Germany Professional League, where he had five goals and four assists in 12 games.
The six-foot-two, 210-pound Theoret had 17 goals and 51 points last season in Barrie. In 2012-13, he scored 25 goals in the regular season and added 14 more in 20 playoff games.
A seventh-round pick of the New York Islanders in 2011, Theoret said UPEI (7-7-2) is well positioned to make a run after finishing the first semester with three straight wins.
“I can’t wait to get into the lineup, and hopefully make a contribution to our season’s second-half success,” said the Montreal native.
Panthers head coach Forbes MacPherson said Theoret originally committed to UPEI in the summer, but opted to give pro hockey a try.
“We kept in touch throughout the fall, and a few weeks ago we began to put the details together,” said MacPherson. “Adding Mitch Theoret to the lineup is huge for our team and program. He can score and he has a very high hockey IQ. He competes hard every night and Island hockey fans are going to love him.”
Theoret will be enrolled in the business administration program.
The Panthers plays an exhibition game at Credit Union Arena in Tignish against St. Thomas on Jan. 3. They start the second half of the season Jan. 9 at UNB.
