The Capitals were the only Prince Edward Island team to win a division title at this year's 12th annual Dairy Queen tournament.
The event features teams in both A and AA levels from atom to midget, spread out across southeast New Brunswick. from Sackville to Bouctouche. For a lot of the Capitals, they are no strangers to the tournament.
“Several girls have been attending this tournament for seven or eight years, and have never made it to even a semifinal game (at any level) before this, so it was a very emotional win for them especially,” said Capitals co-coach Stephen Gaudet.
Round robin
After losing 3-2 to the SEFHA Hawks and tying Capital District 1-1, the Capitals finished fifth after round-robin play.
The Caps then played stingy defence throughout the playoff round en route to the final.
Summerside pulled out a 2-1 win over the SEFHA Panthers in the quarter-finals, and then defeated the Montague Stars by an identical score in the semifinals.
That set the stage for the championship game against the Stars, and the Caps would avenge that round-robin loss with a solid 3-1 victory.
Erin Arsenault-Gallant banged in a loose puck to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead in the first period.
There was no more scoring until the third period, when Summerside defenceman Katie Vriends scored to extend the lead to 2-0.
After the Stars made it a one-goal game, blue-liner Karrington Palmer added an insurance goal to round out the scoring. Mary Kate Picketts, Julia Johnson, Melanie Rodger and Brianna Gunning chipped in with assists for the Caps.
Hailey Swift recorded the goaltending win in the final.
